Background:

Outspan Enterprises Ltd was established in 1977 as an agricultural produce company. At the time, the company’s major exports were; cocoa beans, coffee, maize grains, beans and green tea leaves for the conventional markets.

In 1999, Management under the chairmanship of Mr. David B. Kayondo (inset, above) decided to venture into the production and export of Organic Agricultural Products under the project named Outspan Organagric Ltd. Initially, the project started with the export of Organic Sesame seed along with cotton and coffee and in November 2000, Outspan introduced a new variety – Sesame II – which gave a better yield and had a higher oil content and has been a big success for all participating farmers.

It was under this venture to expand in it's scope of export products that Outspan Enterprises Ltd has grown to be one of the leading exporters of Organic products in East Africa. Currently, the company now mainly deals in the export of Cotton lint, Sesame seed, Cocoa beans, Red birdeye chillies, Passion fruits, Dry Ginger and Mangoes which are all organically produced.

Outspan Enterprises Ltd exports to a number of countries all over the world like Netherlands, France, Germany, U.S.A, Great Britain, Italy, Spain, India, Israel, Japan, Switzerland, Zambia and Rwanda.

We are a growing company and are still looking to increase our market scope.

Current Projects:

Outspan Enterprises Ltd is currently participating in the (EPOPA) project to enhance the export of organic sesame from Ochero county in Uganda.

Export Promotion of Organic Products from Africa (EPOPA) is a programme created by the Swedish international Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) in 1994. The programme currently has projects in Uganda and Tanzania. EPOPA gives assistance in finding buyers and to get the product certified.

In 2004, Outspan Enterprises Ltd changed its certification to IMO/Naturland, which is IFOAM, NOP and JAS accredited. This was aimed at enabling our products access to the European, American and Japanese Organic market, which are constantly expanding.

Under this project, Outspan Enterprises Ltd exports about 400 tonnes of Organic Sesame per year.
